Retired samurai Kumosuke leads a lazy existence in Edo with his wife, son Shinnosuke and infant daughter Ohana, pretending to run a courier service while mostly smoking, drinking sake and pursuing women. His routine is shattered when a Shinsengumi squad under the young swordsman Ichimonji Hyougo arrives, compelling Kumosuke to pick up his sword and defend his family.
