Young John Dolittle once had the unique ability to converse with animals, a gift he first discovered while chatting with his dog, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres. Intrigued by the dog’s explanation that canines greet each other by sniffing, John awkwardly mimics this behavior when meeting his new principal. However, this oddity leads to concern from his father, Archer Dolittle (played by [Ossie Davis]), who enlists the local minister to perform what he believes to be a crucial exorcism. The unfortunate outcome? John’s dog inadvertently attacks the minister, prompting Archer to give up the dog for adoption, which devastates young John and causes him to retreat from communicating with animals altogether.

Fast forward thirty years, and we find John Dolittle, brilliantly portrayed by Eddie Murphy, residing in San Francisco, California. Now a doctor, he is married with two children and, ironically, harbors a strong aversion to animals. His elder daughter Charisse (referred to as Paprika, inspired by Salt-n-Pepa) is 13, while his younger child, Maya (played by [Kyla Pratt]), is an introverted young girl fixated on nurturing a swan egg. Maya’s reluctance to attend summer camp stems from her fear that the egg will hatch in her absence, leading to a bond with whatever is nearby instead of with her.

Meanwhile, John’s wife Lisa (portrayed by [Kristen Wilson]) yearns to connect with him, especially as a large medical company, led by the ambitious Calloway (played by Peter Boyle), seeks to buy his practice for a staggering $4 million. John is faced with a dilemma: he prefers to manage the sale personally rather than handing it over to his enthusiastic colleague, Dr. Mark Weller (played by Oliver Platt), who dreams of the financial windfall, while another partner, Dr. Gene Reiss (played by Richard Schiff), raises concerns about potential downsizing.

In a bid to spend quality time with his family, John embarks on a country vacation. However, he is soon pulled back into the chaos of his work. After a series of misadventures involving Maya’s missing guinea pig Rodney (voiced by [Chris Rock]), John’s life takes a wild turn when he accidentally hits a dog while driving home. To his astonishment, the dog, named Lucky, speaks, exclaiming, “Watch where you’re going next time, you bone-head!” This marks the beginning of John’s resurgence into the world of animal communication.

The next day, during a pivotal meeting with Calloway, John’s reality shifts as animals begin to seek him out for help. Initially terrified of this bizarre twist, John consults Dr. Sam Litvak (played by Steven Gilborn) for a CAT scan, only to find nothing physically amiss. As his gift awakens once more, John discovers that various animals, including a talkative owl (voiced by [Jenna Elfman]), have come to rely on him.

The situation escalates when John learns of a distressed tiger named Jake (voiced by Albert Brooks), contemplating suicide due to immense pain. With the support of Lucky, John begins to reclaim his passion for his work, realizing the importance of his talent. However, faced with rejection from his own family and being committed to an insane asylum for seemingly losing his grip on reality, John grapples with the decision to suppress his gift.

Eventually, circumstances unfold leading John to a fateful party where he takes a bold step to operate on Jake, showcasing his skills in front of skeptical guests, including Calloway. Despite the unfolding chaos, John successfully saves Jake from his suffering, ultimately impressing Calloway but deciding against selling his practice.

In a heartwarming conclusion, John Dolittle embraces both his human and veterinary roles, nurturing his unique abilities. Meanwhile, Maya’s egg hatches into an unexpected alligator, and John along with Lucky head toward the future, visiting Jake at the circus as they continue to bond, all while a delightful tune, “Talk with the Animals,” plays in the backdrop.
