A gang of criminals—including a piano player and the hulking ex‑convict “Gruesome”—steal a scientist’s formula for a gas that temporarily paralyzes anyone who inhales it. Gruesome accidentally inhales the gas, is thought dead, placed in a morgue, then revives and escapes, drawing the attention of detective Dick Tracy. When the gang later uses the paralyzing gas to rob a bank, Tracy devotes himself to stopping them.
