Two of the top salesmen at Treadline Tire Company, Michael Vartan as Rodney and Sean Astin as Mike, rule the floor with swagger, quick wit, and a knack for getting laughs at the expense of others. They bully the secretaries led by Celia Weston as Jane and spar with their loud, abrasive coworker, David Cross as Ken Castro. Their boss, Robert Klein as Bob Farrell, mostly tolerates their antics because the pair consistently delivers big wins—especially after a softball victory that ends with Mike delivering a wedgie to Castro and a shared moment of celebratory bravado.

Tragedy strikes when Bob Farrell dies of a heart attack, and the office dynamic shifts overnight. With Farrell gone, Castro takes the reins, but instead of firing the dynamic duo, he demotes them to the secretarial pool. Rodney is assigned to the sadistic Earl Frank, while Mike is paired with the newly installed executive Constance Zimmer as Elizabeth Holland, a woman whom Castro privately fancies.

Back home, Rodney hides the truth from his fiancée and Sara Foster as Jennifer Daniels, along with her father Patrick St. Esprit as JR Daniels, insisting that he has earned a promotion. The lie gnaws at him as he and Mike hatch a plan to claw their way back to their old status by befriending the other secretaries, a group that already hates Castro with a quiet fervor.

As the two men circle their new coworkers, they find themselves drawn into the group’s vengeance against Castro. The crew schemes to trap Castro in a bathroom flooded with toilet water, while Rodney and Mike also try to help the women in their orbit—Betty, played by Cleo King, pursues weight loss; Tina, portrayed by Jill Bartlett, confronts a co-worker who had a one-night stand with her friend; Olivia, acted by Cathy Shim, searches for the perfect anniversary gift for her husband, which the men bluntly dub a “blow job.” The women’s softball team benefits from their efforts, and wins the Secretaries’ League title, a small victory that underscores the movie’s playful but pointed look at office life.

Meanwhile, Castro’s cruelty intensifies, widening the chasm between him and the secretaries while jeopardizing a major deal with Reilly Auto Parts. His callousness culminates in him destroying the secretaries’ break room, a decision that pushes the workers toward a union. Led by Mike and Rodney, the secretaries rise up, quit tolerating the mistreatment, and take to the streets in protest. The tension erupts on the local news when Jennifer and JR catch Rodney in the act of protesting, forcing Jennifer to confront the consequences of her fiancé’s public stand and ultimately leading to a painful rift in their engagement.

Desperate to preserve the company’s fortunes, Rodney begs Castro for his old job back, only to be rebuffed with a stark truth: there was never any real chance of restoring his position. Castro then reveals a harsher reality—that layoffs would follow the union’s victory. Undeterred, Rodney, Mike, and Jane—whose ambition has long burned to become a sales representative—head to Reilly executives and close the deal just as Castro storms in, hoping to halt their progress. A confrontation ensues, and Mike knocks Castro out, a symbolic turning point in the office’s power structure.

The next morning, the path to reconciliation opens. Rodney finally wins back his old job and resolves to make amends with Jennifer. In a bold, unapologetic moment, he proclaims his love by stripping naked in front of the street, a gesture that is met with stunned awe and, more importantly, support from Jennifer after she learns of all the good he has accomplished. Their reconciliation feels earned, grounded in honesty and late-found responsibility. The film closes on an upward note: Rodney marries Jennifer, Mike begins officially dating Elizabeth, Jane becomes a sales rep for Treadline, and the secretaries enjoy a brighter, more functional break room. Rodney and Mike are now running the company, and Rodney finally earns JR’s approval. Castro, demoted and humbled, ends the story dancing for traffic in a tire costume, a comic capstone to a wild ride through ambition, friendship, and corporate upheaval.
