In the spring of 1959, the CHP launched a political “spring offensive” that clashed with the hopeful atmosphere of previous years. After the crash of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes’s plane eliminated any chance of dialogue, İsmet Pasha donned his boots in April and led 46 deputies on an expedition. They followed the historic route of the Great Offensive from the War of Independence, stopping first in Uşak, where İnönü had previously captured Greek commander‑in‑chief Trikupis.
