Spoilers ahead
In 1909, on a farm in rural Ireland, Sarah Gilmartin [Saskia Reeves] comes with her mother, Martha Gilmartin [Brenda Bruce], to keep house for a widower and his two grown sons. The arrangement sets the stage for a quietly tense, unconventional blend of affection, obligation, and desire to unfold against the backdrop of small-town life.
After the elder Hamilton Echlin Sr. dies in a boating accident, the household shifts. Martha leaves the farm, but Sarah stays on as housekeeper and gradually forms intimate connections with both brothers, first with the taciturn younger Frank [Ciarán Hinds], and then with the amiable elder Hamilton [Geoffrey Golden]. The situation tests community norms and complicates loyalties, as love crosses strict social boundaries and defies easy moral labels.
