In 1883, against the vast stretches of the Dakota Territory, a tenacious bounty hunter named Cochrane pursues Cincinnati John Mason Christian Slater, a man whose reputation has darkly followed him across frontier towns. Mason’s past is crowded with violence and consequences: three men die because of his actions, and a Mexican prisoner’s family seeks justice after a difficult release decision. Some whisper that Mason may have killed for The Pinkertons, while he himself admits to having once worn the badge of a Texas ranger. The tension between law and lawlessness lingers as Cochrane closes in.

A masked gang robs the mail in Wyoming, and gunfire erupts on both sides, leaving a trail of casualties that darkens the layered loyalties of frontier life. The danger intensifies at a Montana card game where Mason wears three aces against three kings; a cheating ruse sparks a quick draw, and Mason moves on to a campfire where he crosses paths with Ben McClure Ben Cotton.

In Promise, Wyoming, Mason confronts his family’s past when he encounters his father, Dad Mason Kenneth W. Yanko, who is far from thrilled to see him. He also meets Alice Jill Hennessy, a sharp, resourceful woman whose warmth makes the reunion bearable. Alice’s presence is notable, and she seems to be the town’s de facto doctor, a role highlighted by her practical, capable spirit. Yet the family drama thickens when Alice’s brother Rodd contemplates losing the ranch and will stop at nothing to get $5000. Mason insists that he doesn’t roam the world in that fashion anymore, a line that foreshadows old loyalties colliding with new pressures.

The masked gang makes a return visit, again wearing their distinctive masks. The only way to tell them apart might be the telltale double X on their shoulders, and this moment marks the first death in the clash of interests. Amid the upheaval, railway workers begin earning more, drawing money and power into a delicate balance. Ben Ben Cotton and Mason volunteer for the money delivery, each attempt met with obstacles and questions about where Mason’s true loyalties lie. The air grows thick with doubt as to whether Mason is acting out of habit, restraint, or something darker.

Meanwhile, the pursuit by Cochrane closes in, and the chase whose ethics and purposes feel murkier with every mile finally catches up with Mason. The frontier is a place where promises are tested, families are pulled apart, and survival hinges on choices that blur the line between duty and desire.
