Dark Angel: The Ascent 1994

Veronica, Angela Featherstone, is a young demoness with a rebellious spirit who longs to live among humans on Earth. Her constant talking back and questions about demon ways earn her punishment after punishment from her father, Hellikin. In a heated moment, her father tries to kill her, but her mother, Charlotte Stewart as Mother Theresa, intervenes and Veronica escapes with her hellhound, Hellraiser. A loyal friend, Mary, helps her uncover a secret passage to the world above, and Veronica slips through the opening into a city street via the sewers. As she steps onto real earth, her demon form sheds, leaving her appearance human and naked, before she scavenges for clothing and is struck by a car.

Dr. Max Barris, Daniel Markel, a physician at a nearby hospital, tends to Veronica’s injuries after the accident. Despite her odd behavior, he finds himself drawn to her, and Veronica persuades him to let her stay at his home since she has nowhere else to go. In Max’s living room she becomes aware of the troubling state of the world, watching relentless news reports about violence and moral decay, and she is particularly affected by the corruption she sees in the local mayor.

Under the cover of night, Veronica ventures back into the streets and intervenes when a pair of muggers attack a woman with clear intent to perpetrate violence. She kills the assailants, drawing the attention of the police. The victim, traumatized by the experience, speaks obsessively about repentance and end times, further intensifying the sense of moral crisis. Veronica’s actions escalate when she takes the lives of two white policemen who harass and beat a Black civilian, and in each killing, Hellraiser consumes a portion of the victims’ flesh. A threatening note is left for the mayor alongside some of Veronica’s hospital clothes at the crime scenes. The case draws officials toward Max’s home, where the investigators follow a hospital lead and confront Veronica in familiar surroundings.

A heavenly message arrives for Veronica’s mother, announcing that Veronica was chosen by God to help cleanse the world of sin. The detectives close in, tracking Veronica as she and Max move from venue to venue, including a screening of a film and a nightclub. At the nightclub, Max’s old friend appears and flirts with him, but Max rebuffs her advances. Veronica confronts the rival in the restroom, and a frightened man hidden in a stall stabs Veronica, wounding her. A senior detective arrives at the door, and Veronica reveals to him—via telepathic vision—the horrors that await sinners in hell. The detective is left shaken and soon withdraws from the case.

Max and Veronica return home, where Max sews her wound without anesthetic. The two share an intimate moment, and Veronica’s true demon form briefly surfaces. Max accepts her, even as he questions whether she is responsible for the recent killings. She confirms that the victims were evil, matching her grim sense of justice. After a night together, Veronica visits the mayor’s home and shows him the same telepathic image of eternal torment she has shown others. The mayor wails in agony, and Veronica flees the property, only to be shot in the back by one of the mayor’s guards as she escapes.

Veronica’s parents receive another message guiding that she must return to the river Styx to heal. When Veronica arrives at Max’s apartment, he urges them to take her to a hospital, but a heavenly messenger appears and tells them that she must return home instead. The outcome remains uncertain, but Max accepts the possibility of Veronica’s departure and watches as she leaves.

A few days later, Veronica reappears in Max’s room, enfolded in a ball of fire. Max looks upon her with relief and exclaims, >Thank God!<
