Daffy Duck makes a stubborn choice to skip winter migration, deciding to stay and “check up on this winter business,” all while gesturing to a newspaper that features a scantily clad snow queen. The other ducks warn him that he’ll regret it, but they still head south, leaving him to face the season on his own. What follows is a mix of curiosity, bravado, and comic misfortune as he discovers that winter’s bite can be more than he bargains for.
At first, the sight of snow and ice fascinates him, and for a moment he revels in the wintry scenery. Yet the weather grows harsher, the food supply dwindles, and Daffy finds himself starving and stranded in a raging snowstorm. A glimmer of hope appears when he spots a log cabin, which he eagerly hopes will offer shelter and nourishment. Inside, however, he encounters a far less welcoming reality: the home of a fox and a weasel, who bemoan their own meager winter pantry of beans and confess they would much rather have steak, baked ham, or even roast duck. The danger is clear once they notice the starving traveler. The duo adopts a deceptive plan, disguising themselves as kindly old ladies in order to lure Daffy in and keep him from escaping.
What follows is a darkly funny game of cat and mouse. The fox and the weasel fatten Daffy up by feeding him large portions of their beans, hoping to keep him close and easy to catch. Daffy’s quick wits keep him one step ahead of trouble for a moment, but he soon realizes the ruse. He outsmarts the weasel, buying a little time, but the fox proves craftier. In a tense chase, Daffy forces the fox to pursue him up a tree, and when the opportunity arises, he delivers a decisive kick that sends his pursuer tumbling down. With the fox’s pursuit momentarily thwarted, Daffy bolts away, heading south in earnest.
As he runs, he passes not one but two signs pointing toward the word “SOUTH,” followed by a bold third sign declaring, “And we do mean SOUTH!” The journey pushes him beyond familiar shores and into a new, tropical horizon. The scene shifts to South America, where a nightclub comes alive with the infectious rhythms of a samba dancer that evokes Carmen Miranda—a playful pastiche that captures the movie’s lively spirit. In a cheeky reversal of danger, Daffy finds himself hiding inside the dancer’s fruit hat, while another fruit hat appears on him as he finally reveals himself to the audience.
The finale brings a sly, self-aware wink to the crowd. Daffy emerges from the fruit hat, wearing a matching hat himself, and with a triumphant, tongue-in-cheek declaration of the South American vibe: “Si, si! I like the ‘South’ American Way. And I do mean SOUTH.” The iris-out leaves a lingering sense of comedic victory and a nod to the character’s constant push to buck conventions, even when the odds are stacked against him.
Throughout this tale, the humor hinges on Daffy’s stubborn appetite for freedom and novelty, contrasted with the fox and weasel’s scheming, set against a wintery backdrop that gradually melts into a sun-soaked finale. The film captures a brisk rhythm of misadventure, flirtation with danger, and an unapologetically cartoonish world where speed, cleverness, and luck determine who comes out on top. The performances, though uncredited, anchor the story with the iconic voices that fans recognize, infusing each beat with lively energy and a timeless appeal.
