Crosswinds 1951

In a remote outpost in New Guinea, two men, Jumbo Johnson and Nick Brandon, the seaplane pilot, drift into talk of a possible gold heist while sharing a drink with the attractive widow Katherine Shelley. A grand schooner named The Seeker then docks, its captain being Steve Singleton. He presents a plan for a pearl-diving expedition to Jumbo, and, spotting Brandon, he strikes him without explanation, setting a tense, inexplicable fuse between the men.

Katherine longs to join the voyage, but Steve sails away as soon as Jumbo secures the necessary documents in town. Weeks pass with no pearls to show for the effort, and Steve is suddenly boarded by Australian naval authorities who scrutinize his papers and declare them forgeries. He is arrested, his boat is impounded, and from a jail cell he learns that Jumbo has bought the boat at auction, reshaping the ownership of the venture and the fate of everyone involved.

A second vessel, The Susan, enters the scene with two Englishmen, Cecil Daubrey and Mousey Sykes. They need a captain because theirs died under mysterious circumstances at sea, and they watch Steve fix their engine before offering him the skipper’s chair. The intrigue widens as Katherine and Brandon have vanished, having taken flight on Brandon’s plane and never returned.

Cecil and Mousey suspect that a fortune—at least $10 million in gold—was aboard Brandon’s craft, and they set out to locate the plane. They depart port with Steve at the helm, and the search leads them to a dead body, Brandon, found near an island where Katherine has been captured by native headhunters. The discovery intensifies the danger and deepens the mystery surrounding loyalties and betrayals from the war years.

Jumbo then joins forces with Steve, who reveals that Brandon betrayed him during the war, complicating the motives behind the present peril. Together they locate the downed plane, only to be double-crossed by Cecil and Mousey, who drop a net over them. In a swift, desperate move, Steve uses a knife to cut them free and pulls Jumbo to safety, turning the tide for the moment.

The plan spirals toward a tragic arc as Cecil is slain by headhunters’ spears and Mousey is cast to crocodiles, underscoring how greed and treachery can unravel quickly in the perilous waters they navigate. Steve, though battered by the sequence of events, manages to return to port alive, and the tale closes with his return and a quiet, hopeful surge as he sails away with Katherine, choosing a future free from the high-stakes schemes that once pulled them all together.
