In Wan Chai, Loy is a 41-year-old bachelor who shares a home with his widowed mother and his aunt. His mother, frustrated by his single status, arranges regular matchmaking lunches with a rotating cast of hopefuls. Across Hennessy Road, orphaned Oi-Lin lives with her aunt and uncle in a busy bathroom-appliances store on Lockhart Road. She is involved with Xu, who has just left prison.
The two families decide to bring Loy and Oi-Lin together for a lunch, hoping to strike a match. At first, neither feels a real spark, but a shared love of detec-tive stories helps them connect, and a genuine friendship begins to form. Yet the families read this bond as romance and start talking about weddings. Loy explains to his mother that Oi-Lin has a boyfriend, hoping to cool the situation.
Oi-Lin grows upset with the confusion and ends the budding friendship. She moves in with their mutual love interest Xu after his release, while Loy rekindles his relationship with his ex-girlfriend Man Yu. Over time, both Loy and Oi-Lin feel uneasy about these arrangements; Loy confesses to [Man Yu] that he has fallen in love, yet questions his own worthiness. In a fit of anger, Xu confronts Loy and beats him, but Loy insists that he can still make Oi-Lin smile, a claim that forces Xu to reassess his own choices and withdraw.
Meanwhile, Loy’s mother finally marries her accountant at the Cotton Tree Drive Marriage Registry, a moment that brings a sense of closure to the family. Later, Loy goes to the Cha Chaan Teng—the same place where he had previously dated Oi-Lin—and there he finds her again. The afternoon they share in that familiar spot becomes a quiet, hopeful ending, as they begin to consider a future built on shared affection and a love of mystery.
