Crazy Knights 1944

In a lighthearted carnival-style mystery, Maxie Rosenbloom, Billy Gilbert, and Shemp Howard run a traveling act featuring a live gorilla named Barny, with Shemp in the gorilla suit for the performances. While heading to their next show, they pick up stranded John Hamilton as Mr. Gardner and his daughter Jayne Hazard as Joan Gardner, and the trio is joined by Bernard Sell as Dave Hammon, who seems smitten with Joan and brings a spark of mischief to the journey. What begins as a routine escort soon twists into a suspicions-filled trek as Mr. Gardner is convinced that someone is trying to kill him, and the actions of his seemingly wary secretary, Mr. Williams Tay Dunn, seem to confirm the danger.

Gardner insists the carnival crew drive him and his entourage to a nearby residence, a plan that irks his daughter and unsettles the mood. The Gardners’ chauffeur, Maxie Rosenbloom, is left behind with their broken-down car, and the group proceeds under a growing cloud of dread. At the sprawling Gardner estate, they encounter a mysterious house servant, Mrs. Benson Minerva Urecal, and an Electrician Dan White who roams the halls. Ghostly voices echo through the house, and pictures shift on their own as figures in sheets drift through the rooms, ratcheting up the sense that something sinister is afoot.

Maxie arrives at the estate shortly after a suspicious figure named Mr. Grogan Tim Ryan, and the plot thickens as the trio joins forces with the improvised gorilla act, with Shemp Howard slipping into the gorilla costume and the real Barney Art Miles breaking free from his mobile cage trailer. A body is soon discovered, marking the moment when the lighthearted carnival atmosphere gives way to a clear case of murder. The runtime runs about 63 minutes, and the tension accelerates toward a brisk resolution in the final tongue-in-cheek minutes.
