Cor, Blimey! opens with the arrival of Sid James’s new wardrobe assistant on the set of Carry On Cleo, on Pinewood Studios in 1963. The on‑set atmosphere is playful yet competitive, with Sid James depicted as a gambling, womanising figure whose antipathy toward his professional rival sits just beneath the surface. The clash with Kenneth Williams—the sharp, acerbic counterpoint to his charm—drives much of the early tension and humor behind the scenes.

James soon meets the charismatic Barbara Windsor, who is at Pinewood to dub a scene in Carry On Spying, and the moment sparks an instant, undeniable attraction. James falls hard, and the surrounding crew—including Windsor—assume his fixation is merely a fling. What begins as a flirtation quickly evolves into something more tangled, as the lines between public persona and private longing blur on a bustling studio lot.

James pursues Windsor with a tenacious energy, following her from the bustle of the sound stages to the notorious flying-bikini-top moment in Carry On Camping. The moment becomes a symbol of their unpredictable dynamic, a mix of fascination, jealousy, and stubborn pursuit that people around them begin to read as a long and risky game of hearts.

In 1973, the fixation continues on location for Carry On Girls, and Windsor makes a calculated move: she agrees to sleep with him once, hoping the romance would burn out. Instead, the affair deepens into a lingering, more complicated relationship that shades the rest of the era, leaving both stars tethered to a liaison that refuses to fade quietly.

By 1976, the affair ends, and only a few months later, James dies at the age of 62 after suffering a heart attack on stage during the opening night of The Mating Season at the Sunderland Empire Theatre. The tragedy lands with a quiet, devastating resonance, casting a long shadow over the bittersweet world of celebrity, rivalry, and the toll of a life lived in the spotlight.

The drama closes on a note of uneasy reconciliation: Kenneth Williams offers Windsor reassurance that James’s death was not her fault, and Windsor, in turn, encourages the melancholic Williams to seek joy more often. For the final scene, Windsor replaces Samantha Spiro and plays herself, bringing the arc full circle with a sense of fragile closure amid the glittering, perilous world they inhabit.
