Spoilers ahead

In 1862, in a rural upstate New York hamlet known as The Corners, daily life hinges on the fragile balance between family, land, and evolving loyalties. Abner Beech, a steady dairy farmer, lives in close quarters with the Irish Hurley family, forming a small, watchful community as the Civil War tears through the nation. Abner is an antiwar Democrat who argues that coercion to resist the secession of the southern states is unconstitutional and morally risky, a stance that gradually earns him suspicion and harassment from neighbors who lean toward Union support. This persistent pressure tightens around him as he becomes the target of sneers and social pressure, the kind of hostility that earns the label of a Copperhead in a time of loud political certainty and righteous anger.
