Captain Sreekumar, commonly known as Kumaran, Mohanlal stars as the ex-military canteen keeper of Mahatma College, a man whose life after service is defined by quiet resilience following a tragedy that claimed his father and sister. He moves through the campus with a steady, almost mentor-like presence, warmly engaging with students, joining in youth festivals, navigating budding romances, soothing fights, and leading campus tours. His generosity extends to bringing teachers back from private tuition, aiming to keep the college community close and functioning.

Madhavi, the college’s English professor, Ambika Mohan harbors a deep grudge against Kumaran, rooted in a memory of a street brawl that disrupted her own joining day. On a routine campus tour, a bus accident occurs, claiming the lives of several students, and Madhavi publicly blames Kumaran for the tragedy. As the dust settles, a different truth begins to surface—Kumaran reveals that his help once allowed Madhavi to secure her position after she became an orphan, by remitting the required funds.

The narrative widens as Kumaran explains a larger plot orchestrated by the ex-education minister, Sethunathan, who has been ousted from power and now seeks to erode Kumaran’s standing among both the college management and the students. The minister’s vendetta is tied to past events at the campus, where he attempted to destroy Kumaran’s reputation. In the course of Kumaran’s confession, the audience learns that the tragedy surrounding Kumaran’s father and sister was not a random accident but a calculated act carried out with the help of the watchman Vasooty T. P. Madhavan. The elder Kumaran saw enough to threaten Sethunathan, and the schemer responded by silencing him and Kumaran’s sister, staging the deaths as an accident.

With the truth laid bare, the students feel rage and fear as they confront Sethunathan. The ex-minister draws a gun, threatening anyone who steps forward, and Kumaran engages in a tense struggle to disarm him. He ultimately defeats Sethunathan, but, recognizing the sanctity of the campus, chooses not to kill him and walks away rather than turning the moment into a bloodbath.

In the aftermath, Kumaran’s name is cleared, and a sense of duty settles over him. The college principal, its manager, and Madhavi’s uncle urge him to stay rather than depart, recognizing that the institution would benefit from his continued presence. Kumaran accepts the ongoing responsibility, pledging to remain as the college’s guardian and guide, effectively becoming the new “College Kumaran” who stands between the students, the faculty, and the threats that once loomed over Mahatma College. He remains a steady, protective force, committed to the students’ growth and the college’s integrity, even as the shadows of the past linger in memory.
