Fern, June Laporte is a high school student who faces a haunting problem: her ex-boyfriend [Robert Klingher], Vincent Martella, has returned from the grave as a ghost. Their past wasn’t entirely happy—Robert was clingy and smothered her, which led to their breakup. At first, Fern tries to make things work, but she quickly realizes that a romance between the living and a ghost is not sustainable, especially as she begins spending time with Harlan, Taylor Clift the football player she’s drawn to.

Robert starts a troubling campaign of supernatural attacks that affect Fern and others around her, forcing Fern to seek help. She turns to her track coach Valeria, Alicia Monet Caldwell, who doubles as a ghost hunter. Valeria provides her with a toolkit designed to combat the spectral menace, including pills that give Fern the ability to see ghosts and to identify the lingering presence around her.

Eventually, Fern must confront the painful truth: she cannot be with Robert because she is living. When she breaks the news, Robert shifts his plan from romantic pursuit to deadly resolve, enlisting several other ghosts to aid in his bid to trap Fern and fuse their restless spirits. This escalation makes it clear that Fern’s safety—and that of her family and friends—depends on more than willpower; it requires courage, strategy, and outside help.

With Valeria and Fern’s family by her side, the confrontation reaches a tense climax. Fern faces off with Robert and, through a mix of resolve and a hard choice, manages to convince him to let her go. His resistance dissolves, and he, along with the other ghosts, vanishes, breaking the immediate threat to Fern’s life.

The film closes on a quiet, hopeful note. After the danger subsides, Harlan asks Fern out on a date, but she chooses honesty and patience for now, signaling that she’d like to remain single for a while before dating again. The story leaves a sense of personal agency and moving forward, even as the memories of the supernatural danger linger in the background.
