The Galaxy 5000 field includes the formidable X-Pilots, led by the highly skilled Peter Kenyon Holmes and Ivan Rob Flanagan, who are suspected of cheating, and a mysterious woman named Astrid Lydia Mackay, with whom Chuck E. soon finds himself drawn during a tense-date at the Soda Shop.

In qualifying, the X-Pilots unveil an energy-boosting substance called Zoom Gas and push Vega-2 speeds that leave Chuck E. and the Songbird eating dust.
