Chantabbai 1986

Chiranjeevi portrays Panduranga “Pandu” Rao, an amateur detective at Universal Detective Agency in Visakhapatnam who idolizes James Bond and even adopts the nickname “James Pond” to mirror his hero in appearance and demeanor. Yet the police and his own coworkers barely take him seriously—especially his assistant Ganapathi and the local police inspector Saumitri—so Pandu often works on cases unofficially, driven by a stubborn belief in his own instincts.

Suhasini Maniratnam brings to life Jwala, a self-employed telephone cleaner who becomes both his friend and a recurring source of skepticism about his abilities. She treats Pandu as a good friend, but does not take his professional detective talents seriously.

When a case lands in Pandu’s lap, Jwala visits the house of a businessman to clean his telephone, only to find herself holding a handgun instead of a receiver. She is accused of killing the businessman and stealing the diamonds he possessed. Pandu takes up the case, but is interrupted by Murthy, a police-appointed detective working with the authorities. Undeterred, Pandu continues to investigate unofficially, while Jwala’s friend Nischala, Aruna Mucherla, a surgeon, arranges her release on bail.

As part of his growing pursuit, Pandu confronts Jwala in his office for an interrogation that goes badly, yet he discovers a crucial clue: Jwala had spotted a chocolate brown Maruti outside the crime scene on the day of the murder. He then notices Murthy using a similar car and contacting jewelers outside Visakhapatnam. With Saumitri’s help, Pandu begins to shadow Murthy and, in a tense sequence, they catch Murthy confessing his crime to a jeweler and arrest him. The victory earns Pandu a formal position: he is appointed head of the Universal Detective Agency.

On Jwala’s recommendation, Nischala brings Pandu a new assignment: to locate her missing paternal half-brother, nicknamed Chantabbai. Chantabbai was born to Gangadharam and his love interest Sarmishta; Gangadharam was forced to marry Nischala’s mother, a marriage that kept them apart until her death. With Gangadharam gravely ill, Nischala wants Chantabbai brought back to give him happiness.

Pandu’s investigation into Chantabbai uncovers a tangled family history. He learns that Gangadharam’s friend Ramkoti raised Sarmishta and Chantabbai for a time and that Ramkoti had two sons, Kalyan and Pattabhi, with the former favored by Ramkoti. Pandu deduces that Kalyan is Gangadharam’s son and introduces him to the family, only for Pattabhi to arrive later claiming to be Chantabbai. The brothers’ fates become intertwined with a series of clever deductions that seem to render both boys as potential heirs, their legitimacy tested by a blood test manipulated by both sides.

The tension rises as Gangadharam expels both brothers and they vow revenge. Meanwhile, Pandu and Jwala fall in love and begin planning their marriage. Then, Nischala reveals that Chantabbai’s aunt Bala has arrived in Visakhapatnam for a family function. Pandu meets Bala and learns that his mother was Sarmishta, the woman once loved by Gangadharam. Realizing his true identity as Chantabbai, Pandu remembers the hardships he faced as a child and the societal ostracism he endured for being illegitimate. He refuses to return to Gangadharam’s house as his son unless a portion of his wealth is donated to the orphanage he runs in the city. Nischala mediates this request, and the condition becomes a turning point in the family’s relationships.

In a dramatic turn, Kalyan and Pattabhi kidnap Pandu and demand ransom from Gangadharam. Pandu sends a message to the family, but Ganapathi notices the number ‘1’ written on the sheet and decodes it by reading the first letter of each word in the message. The instruction reveals that Pandu is not the real heir, prompting Gangadharam to act. He stages a plan and leads the brothers to a house where they discover him playing cards with his friend. The kidnappers arrest the brothers with Saumitri’s timely intervention, and the story closes on a hopeful note: Gangadharam accepts Pandu as his son, and Pandu looks forward to marrying Jwala.
