Chander Bari 2007

The Sanyal clan is a sprawling, multigenerational brood living in a sunlit mansion in Bhawanipur. At its head sits the nonagenarian grandfather [Haradhan Bandopadhyay], whose quiet authority anchors a household that feels more like a small village than a family. His son [Ranjit Mallick] runs the home, while a formidable daughter-in-law rules the roost with a sharp eye and a firm hand. Their children—the daughter [Koel Mallick] and the son [Rishi Kaushik]—grow up under the same roof, in a house that seems to have more servants than relatives, embodying the long-standing ideal of a joint family.

Excitement mounts when the elder son, [Babul Supriyo], returns from London with a wife, [Rituparna Sengupta], and her child from a previous marriage in tow. The wife carries a complicated history: her first husband, linked to the underworld, was killed in police crossfire. Most of the family welcomes the new additions, but the mother-in-law remains wary and refuses to acknowledge their presence.

The central arc follows how two women in the family—[Rituparna Sengupta] and [Koel Mallick]—build bridges to keep the joint household intact. Their efforts hinge on warmth, tact, and resilience, with the beauty and resolve of the daughter-in-law earning much of the credit for guiding the clan through upheaval. Through gentle humor and everyday moments, the film shows how empathy and cooperation can soften old resentments, redraw the lines of kinship, and remind a sprawling family that they are bound by more than blood.
