Celeste in the City 2004

Celeste Blodgett is a somewhat unkempt young woman who leaves her small hometown for Manhattan, chasing a dream of becoming a journalist. Her romantic ideas about the big city are quickly challenged when she discovers her new apartment is cramped, dirty, and rat-infested. Luckily, her neighbor, Kyle Halley, an interior designer, lends a hand and helps her fix up the place, turning it into something she can actually call home.

She lands a gig as a lowly fact checker at the newspaper the New York Examiner, a position that fills her with mixed feelings of doubt and determination about what she can accomplish in this vast city.

Celeste reconnects with her cousin, Dana, who has come out as gay since moving to the city. Dana introduces her to a circle of friends, and with their influence, Celeste receives a makeover that boosts her confidence both personally and professionally. This fresh look and renewed self-assurance put her more squarely on the path to becoming a real journalist, and she feels a rush of excitement about what lies ahead.

Kyle has been harboring feelings for Celeste, a fact she doesn’t realize because she assumes he is gay given his line of work as an interior designer. In a well-meaning but misguided attempt to be helpful, she sets Kyle up with Dana on a date. Kyle expresses confusion, and Dana quickly figures out what happened, sensing the underlying attraction between Celeste and the man who has quietly supported her.

As Celeste climbs toward real journalistic opportunities, she confronts a troubling pattern with her boss, Mitch Tanzer, who was treating her well mainly because he was sexually attracted to her. She stands up to him and calls out his inappropriate behavior, refusing to tolerate that power dynamic any longer. Through these challenges, Celeste learns more about herself and the people around her, and in a surprising turn, she discovers that Kyle Halley is actually straight, leading to the budding possibility of a relationship between them.
