Six months after winning the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have returned home to District 12, the poorest sector of Panem. The mood is tense as President Snow arrives to remind Katniss that her televised acts of defiance have sparked unrest across the districts. Back in District 12, the Capitol’s grip tightens with an intensified Peacekeeper presence. Gale is caught poaching and whipped publicly, a punishment only checked by Haymitch’s intervention. While hunting, Katniss encounters Bonnie and Twill, refugees from District 8 whose uprising has failed. They reveal plans to reach District 13, believed to be destroyed in prior rebellion, hoping it hides underground. Katniss sustains injuries while climbing back over District 12’s electrified fence, and learns that Districts 3 and 4 have also risen up in revolt.

A new, brutal twist ushers in the 75th Hunger Games: tributes will be drawn from the surviving victors of previous Games. Katniss, District 12’s lone female victor, must face the arena alongside either Haymitch or Peeta. The arena’s deadly traps begin to close in: Peeta is knocked out by a force field, and the party narrowly escapes a toxic fog. Mags makes a selfless sacrifice to ensure Finnick’s survival and Peeta’s continued protection. Beetee devises a plan to use electronics and lightning to disable the force field and save their group, but the attempt is thwarted by interference from District 2 victors. In the midst of the chaos, Peeta kills the District 2 male Brutus, a brutal turn that shifts the balance of power in the arena.

When Katniss regains consciousness, she travels toward District 13 alongside Finnick, Beetee, and Haymitch, where a deeper truth begins to surface. Haymitch and Plutarch Heavensbee, the new Head Gamemaker, reveal that there was always a covert plan to rescue Katniss—a plan that used her as the living symbol of rebellion. Meanwhile, it’s learned that Peeta, along with Johanna and Enobaria from District 2, has been captured by the Capitol. The final revelation comes from Gale: District 12 has been destroyed, and the rescue mission’s stakes have never been higher.
