MI6 agent James Bond (Daniel Craig](/actor/daniel-craig)) is officially promoted to 00 status after successfully eliminating two targets: the treacherous section chief Dryden at the British Embassy in Prague and his associate, Fisher. The narrative unfolds in Uganda, where the enigmatic Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) introduces high-ranking Lord’s Resistance Army member Steven Obanno (Isaach De Bankole) to Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), an Albanian private banker who serves many of the world’s terrorists. Obanno entrusts Le Chiffre with a considerable sum of money for investment, specifying high returns with minimal risk. However, Le Chiffre decides to gamble on putting options against aerospace manufacturer Skyfleet, leveraging insider information about an impending terrorist attack.

The action escalates in Madagascar, where Bond pursues bomb-maker Mollaka (Sebastien Foucan) through the city. After a tense chase, Bond recovers Mollaka’s phone, which contains the code “Ellipsis” in his SMS folder, only to kill him in a dramatic explosion. In response to this incident, MI6 chief M (Judi Dench) chastises Bond for disregarding orders, as the agency learns of the impending expiration of Le Chiffre’s put options.

Following a trail that leads him to the Bahamas, Bond discovers that corrupt official Alex Dimitrios (Simon Abkarian) has connections to Le Chiffre. After winning a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 at a poker game, he seduces Dimitrios’ wife, Solange (Caterina Murino). Bond later tracks Dimitrios to Miami, where he eliminates him after a bomb plot is thwarted at the airport involving a prototype airliner.

To recover his clients’ lost $101 million, Le Chiffre organizes a high-stakes Texas hold ‘em tournament at Casino Royale in Montenegro. MI6 enters Bond into the tournament, believing that a defeat would force Le Chiffre to take asylum, spilling valuable information. Teaming up with Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), a British Treasury agent safeguarding the $10 million buy-in, Bond navigates the intricacies of the game and each other’s backgrounds during their train journey—where they make astute observations about one another’s lives.

As the tournament progresses, Bond cleverly deduces Le Chiffre’s tell and gains an advantage. However, things take a turn when Obanno confronts Le Chiffre and uses Bond to cover his losses. Just when Bond is poised for victory, Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright), a CIA operative, decides to support Bond when Vesper is attacked.

The tension heightens when Le Chiffre’s lover, Valenka (Ivana Milicevic), poisons Bond’s drink, leading to a race against time for his recovery. After a close call, Bond returns to the tournament and completes a stunning victory, winning a whopping $115 million.

In a shocking twist, Le Chiffre kidnaps Vesper to use as leverage against Bond. What follows is a horrifying scene of torture where Le Chiffre tries to extract the winnings’ details from Bond. Just as things seem dire, Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) enters and punishes Le Chiffre for his betrayal, allowing Bond and Vesper to escape.

Recovering in an MI6 hospital, Bond learns of Vesper’s betrayal after the funds are never deposited. In love, they escape to Venice, but upon discovering her duplicity, Bond is nearly devastated. The climax builds as he attempts to rescue Vesper, who locks herself away in a rising flood, sacrificing herself for his safety. After her death, Bond receives intel that reveals Vesper was coerced into her betrayal under threats against her loved ones.

With a heart hardened, Bond returns to MI6 service and follows a lead from Vesper’s phone, tracking down Mr. White. In a gripping face-off, Bond identifies himself with the iconic line, “The name’s Bond. James Bond.”
