Carla’s Song, set against the turbulent backdrop of 1987, offers a poignant and intimate portrayal of love and resilience amidst the chaos of war. The story begins in Glasgow, where a kind-hearted Scottish bus driver, George Lennox, crosses paths with Carla, a Nicaraguan refugee played by [Oyanka Cabezas]. Their initial encounter occurs when Carla secretly boards George’s bus without paying and, despite her hesitations, they share a cup of coffee. As they spend time together, Carla remains guarded, reluctant to share her past or origins, hinting at a history shrouded in pain. Recognizing her need for support, George helps her find temporary shelter at a friend’s flat.
However, the fragile new connection is shattered when George discovers Carla in a state of crisis, having attempted to take her own life. She is rushed to the hospital, and George stays by her side as she begins her recovery. During this vulnerable period, Carla confides that she had been reading letters from her boyfriend, Antonio, which she had never opened before. The letters, filled with disturbing content, leave her haunted and despairing, leading her to attempt suicide. She reveals to George that she is unsure of Antonio’s and her family’s current whereabouts and pleads for comfort and understanding. It becomes painfully clear that Carla is overwhelmed by trauma, suffering from symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder.
Motivated by a sense of duty and compassion, George decides they must travel back to Nicaragua to uncover what has happened to Antonio and Carla’s family. Their journey exposes them to the brutal realities of the US-backed Contra insurgency against the Sandinistas. Once in Nicaragua, they meet Bradley, an aid worker and fellow American, who is documenting human rights abuses committed by the Contras. Bradley explains that he doesn’t know the fate of Antonio but plans to head north soon, urging Carla to join him.
As they journey further, tragedy strikes when a truck engine overheats and explodes in a dramatic burst of steam that closely resembles gunfire, terrifying Carla and causing her to collapse into catatonia. George tries to comfort her, and Bradley, passing by in a 4x4, offers them a ride, attempting to soothe Carla’s distress. During this time, Bradley confesses that Antonio has been staying with him, which stirs complex emotions. Carla confronts Bradley about releasing herself from the past, and he grapples with his own memories.
Nightmares and flashbacks torment Carla, as she relives moments from the revolution — often experiencing extreme violence. She witnesses herself being shot, Antonio falling after being shot, and her unable to save him, all while hiding in the bushes in horror. Their quest takes them to Carla’s family village, warned of Contra fighters lurking nearby. When they finally arrive, Carla reunites with her loved ones, and the village is soon attacked by heavily armed Contras. The assault results in loss of life and destruction, illustrating the brutal toll of the conflict.
In the aftermath, George learns that Carla and Antonio have a daughter. He urges her to return to Glasgow with him and bring their baby, but Carla refuses, overwhelmed by her trauma. Bradley then reveals the horrifying extent of Antonio’s suffering — captured and tortured by Contras operating out of Honduras, who mutilated him with acid and left him paralyzed and disfigured. The revelation devastates George, who runs to find Carla, helping her face the truth.
The story reaches an emotional climax as George finds Antonio, now disfigured but alive, sitting with a guitar. Antonio’s music and gentle gesture offer a powerful moment of reconciliation. Carla, filled with tears, sings alongside him, honoring their bond. As the story concludes, George prepares to leave, having found peace and closure. Both he and Carla carry the memories of their shared experience and continue to hold each other in their hearts, symbolizing hope and resilience amidst the scars of war.
