Captive’s Island 1966

A young man in a traveler’s disguise arrives on a quiet island, seeking lodging from the ship’s captain Nomoto. The visitor, Saburo, has returned to Shimanagashi after twenty years, a place intertwined with a brutal chapter from his past. His father, Genichiro Nishihara, was an anarchist, and Saburo’s family was murdered by Sergeant Otake, a military police officer who was assigned the grim task of burying the truth. To shield the authorities from blame, Saburo was sent to the island, a place where life carried on under a tense code of control and fear. Otake remains on the island, continuing the harsh discipline that once broke Saburo, as he pursues reforming juvenile delinquents with an iron fist. Saburo’s attempts to escape are thwarted time and again, leaving him bloodied and exhausted, while his companion Matsui betrays him and his teacher Kuroki watches, fearful and unable to intervene.

One brutal day, Otake throws Saburo into the sea and leaves him to drown. Yet fate intervenes: a fisherman rescues him, and Saburo vanishes from the shores for two decades. When he returns, Matsui has risen to the position of president at a construction company, signaling a shift in the island’s power dynamics and offering a stark contrast to the character Saburo once knew. On this return, a young woman named Aya, the daughter of Otake, is narrowly saved by Saburo when three men threaten her. Aya, who already carries memories of Saburo from when she was a child, finds herself drawn into a dangerous connection as Saburo’s presence reawakens old wounds and new possibilities. Aya is also the daughter of Daigoku, tethering her fate to the island’s powerful figures and the history that shaped them.

As Saburo and Aya cross paths more often, the past and present collide with quiet intensity. Saburo’s growing feelings for Aya complicate his carefully laid plans for revenge, pitting tenderness against vengeance in a landscape where every ally could become an enemy and every memory could ignite anew.
