In post-Napoleonic France, the Duke of Corlaine Manolo Fábregas openly reprimands the Count Villiers Eduardo Noriega when his Spanish fiancée, Princess Maria Leonora Amar, has disappeared into the night. The trouble compounds when Maria’s carriage is halted by highwaymen on a bleak road, and the valiant Captain Scarlett Richard Greene—a Frenchman who has just returned from England—fights them off with calm skill. Villiers arrives soon after and takes the last of the attackers into custody, yet his tone remains sharp and ungracious toward Scarlett, setting a prickly dynamic between the two men from the start.

Scarlett’s loyalty to justice soon brings him into contact with his old ally, the Friar Jorge Treviño. The Friar warns him that the duke is machinating beyond mere personal slights, seizing property and ordering guards to terrorize villages. Resistance is met with imprisonment, and the threat of losing homes to the duke’s capricious power looms large over the countryside. Scarlett initially shrugs off the warning, but the stakes rise when he discovers that his own family estate has already been annexed by Villiers, turning old loyalties into a personal vendetta of survival and honor.

A bold night follows: Scarlett slips into Maria’s bedroom on the estate, and the captive princess makes a striking move, offering him money if he helps her escape. Scarlett, however, insists that friendship is all the payment he will accept, choosing moral duty over a price. Their ruse is threatened when Scarlett is captured and thrust into the dungeon alongside the highwayman Pierre DuCloux [Nedrick Young], a man who reveals a grim backstory: his family’s lands were seized by the duke, forcing him into a desperate trade. The two men quickly forge a bond in adversity, and together they outwit their guard, escaping just as wedding bells begin to ring for Maria and Villiers.

Before fleeing, Scarlett musters the will to rescue Maria, and the trio—Scarlett, Pierre, and Maria—speed toward a makeshift safe encampment where Pierre’s friends help lead the pursuing guards astray. Villiers, realizing someone is masquerading as Maria, spots the hooded rider whose disguise slips away and exposes the imposter. A fierce duel erupts between Villiers and Scarlett, and Villiers falls in what becomes a fatal reckoning for their feud.

Maria, exchanging her wedding dress for men’s clothing, chooses to ride with Scarlett and Pierre rather than return to a life of arranged matches and social cages. The trio then embarks on a broader campaign: they patrol the countryside, aiding peasants who fall foul of the duke’s guards and confiscations. The duke, frustrated by their success, offers Scarlett’s estate to his ally Etienne Dumas Carlos Múzquiz if he can bring down the outlaw band. Etienne adopts the persona of a peasant and hatches a plan with the head of the guards to lure Scarlett into a fatal trap under the pretense of a mock execution.

Etienne’s ruse seems to work when a staged execution is set to unfold, but Maria, Pierre, and Scarlett survive by trusting their instincts and keeping watch. The Friar reappears with another summons, sending Scarlett toward Josephine, a farmer’s wife whom they had helped earlier, inviting him to pay a visit. Etienne, volunteering to accompany Scarlett to shield him, lends an air of dangerous duplicity, especially when Josephine’s affections are manipulated to turn a secret plan against the captain. Etienne secretly tells Josephine that Scarlett has rebuffed her, and he leaves a pouch of gold to secure her cooperation in a trap.

Unaware of Etienne’s deceit, Scarlett accompanies the traitor back to the farmhouse, where Josephine’s elaborate hospitality becomes a setup. Etienne signals his trap with stealth, and Josephine steps outside, but Etienne thrusts his sword through the opening—only to strike at Scarlett’s empty cloak. Sensing something amiss, Scarlett confronts Etienne in a duel that ends with Etienne’s death, while Maria and Pierre return to the farmhouse just in time to help fend off the guards and discipline Josephine for her part in the plot.

The next phase of their crusade sees the trio overwhelm another greedy guard at a toll road, maintaining their momentum as they protect the innocent from the duke’s greed. A sudden chase leads to disaster when Maria is hurled from her horse and captured. Public notices threaten Maria with execution at dawn unless Scarlett and Pierre surrender. The duke’s confidence grows as he anticipates a rescue attempt, but the outlaws’ cunning once again proves superior, and they breach his stronghold with a bold, carefully orchestrated plan.

Pierre faces several guards in a duel while Scarlett confronts the duke directly, finding Maria bound to a chair in a room of hidden danger. A guard appears, knife poised at Maria’s throat, and Scarlett seizes the opportunity to let the duke go free. Yet Maria’s quick bite to the guard’s hand jolts him into reach of Scarlett’s blade, and the skilled captain disables the guard. The confrontation reaches its fever pitch as Scarlett defeats the duke in a final duel, freeing Maria and earning a kiss that seals their hard-won alliance. With the duke defeated and the road ahead open, the three friends ride away, united in their shared resolve to protect the vulnerable and challenge tyranny wherever they find it.
