Captain America finds himself excavated from the wreckage of a crashed plane, clasping his iconic shield. The antagonist, Johann Schmidt, a high-ranking Nazi official, is on the hunt for a powerful glass cube known as the Tesseract. Schmidt, the leading scientist in Nazi Germany, seeks to unlock superhuman potential derived from the occult and manages to procure the Tesseract from Norway.
Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a frail asthmatic rejected from military service, struggles with his dreams of fighting against the Axis powers while his friend, Bucky Barnes, successfully enlists in the 107th Infantry. Noticing Steve’s unyielding spirit despite his weaknesses, Dr. Abraham Erskine (played by Stanley Tucci) allows Steve to apply for the super soldier program.
While Schmidt collaborates with Arnim Zola to harness the Tesseract’s power for creating advanced weaponry, it becomes evident that Schmidt, once aligned with Hitler, now severed ties to establish Hydra as an independent faction.
Under the supervision of Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones), Erskine commences Steve’s basic training. Joining them is Peggy Carter (Haley Atwell), a British officer who captures Steve’s interest. Despite being the weakest, Steve surprises everyone with his courage and selflessness.
Erskine reveals the tragic backstory of the serum that granted Schmidt his powers but had catastrophic effects, transforming him into a skeletal figure. When Erskine injects Steve with the serum, he rapidly transforms into a super soldier. However, tragedy strikes when a Nazi spy kills Erskine and escapes with the last serum vial, only to ingest it himself when pursued.
In his new role as Captain America, Steve embarks on a mission to save his captured comrades, including Bucky, who have been taken by Hydra. With support from Howard Stark, a defense contractor and friend to Peggy, Steve infiltrates enemy territory, confronting Johann Schmidt and his terrifying red skull visage. Following intense battles, Steve dismantles Hydra’s operations, all while grappling with betrayal and loss, particularly the death of Bucky during a critical mission.
As Steve confronts Johann in his final hideout, Schmidt unveils a plane armed with bombs labeled for major U.S. cities. In a daring showdown, Steve boards the aircraft as it departs. After a fierce struggle, he destroys the Tesseract control panel, causing it to activate a portal that consumes Johann.
Understanding the plane is on autopilot, Steve contacts Peggy to express his regret and crashes it into the ocean. Awakening decades later in a 1940s hospital, he discovers he’s been in suspended animation for 70 years, grappling with a world that has moved on without him. He encounters Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), who informs him of his lengthy slumber and the world he’s missed, leaving Steve with a bittersweet sense of loss as he reflects, “I had a date.”
In a climactic post-credits scene, Steve trains vigorously in a gym, illustrating his readiness for the challenges ahead. Fury’s appearance signals that a new mission awaits, while glimpses of other heroes stir anticipation for the battles yet to come, hinting at an emerging team of superheroes – an army ready to face impending threats, culminating in the promise that their journey continues.
