Becca Hannah Hodson notices strange disturbances weaving through her campus, and the tension spikes when Ari [Jesse McCartney] falls from a great height and reappears unharmed. The pair team up to uncover the campus’s hidden currents, puzzling over clues while being taunted by Elliot [Jack Falahee], the student blamed for Ari’s fall. Their investigation pulls them into a wider web of campus secrets, where the stakes keep rising and trust becomes scarce.
Arun [Ritesh Rajan] and his girlfriend Izzy [Alice Kremelberg] become entangled in a perilous game of blackmail waged by a faction known as the Griefers—students who crave total freedom on campus and will use coercion to bend others to their will. Arun confides in Greta [Conor Leslie], a new student who arrives with her own history of pressure and risk, about his parents’ insistence on an arranged marriage and how that pressure weighs on his choices.
During a party, the campus’s oddities erupt into a crisis as Elliot abruptly disintegrates and a tremor ripples across the grounds. Only Becca, Ari, Arun, and Izzy witness these anomalies, and they quickly find themselves pursued by the campus security. Izzy later claims she cannot remember the blackmail that started it all, and before the Griefers can reveal any secrets, they disintegrate. Greta helps the guards capture Izzy, but she, too, disintegrates after allowing Arun to slip away.
The escape attempt intensifies as Ari, Becca, and Arun try to leave the campus through its main exit, only to end up back at the entrance, while a strange, hostile entity watches from the sky and seems intent on striking them down. The quartet manages to evade the threat and reunites with Izzy as they search for a safe place to hide.
The truth finally comes to light: everything happening on campus is taking place inside a video game, and the students are avatars controlled by real players. Arun is a young Indian man who resents being forced into an arranged marriage; Greta is the young Indian woman arranged to marry Arun, who was playing the game to meet him; Izzy is a closeted trans woman; and Ari’s player has been using the game to generate income. Yet Ari, Arun, and Izzy have broken free from their players’ control and gained sentience, while Becca is implied to be a virus that escaped quarantine and infected the others. The programmers behind the game are the ones trying to erase them to prevent the infection from spreading.
With this new knowledge, Arun, Izzy, Ari, and Becca weigh their options. Becca proposes a bold plan: they will reach out to their creators and demand answers, seeking autonomy beyond the boundaries of the game. Their decision marks the first step in choosing how to face a world where the line between code and consciousness has finally blurred.
