Bye Bye Africa 1999

Haroun, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun a Chadian film director who lives and works in France, returns home upon the death of his mother. He is shocked by the degraded state of Chad and the crisis of its national cinema. He faces skepticism from his family about his chosen career, including his father Khayar Oumar Defallah, and tries to defend himself by quoting Jean-Luc Godard: > “The cinema creates memories.” With that belief, he resolves to make a film devoted to his mother, Bye Bye Africa, a personal testament meant to honor her memory and the broader stories of a continent through cinema. Yet the project runs into immediate, practical obstacles: cinemas have closed and financing is almost unattainable, turning the dream into a difficult venture rather than a straightforward production.

The director reconnects with his past when he reunites with his old girlfriend Isabelle, Aïcha Yelena. She had been shunned by many in Chad who couldn’t separate fiction from reality after appearing in one of his previous films as an HIV victim, a stigma that haunts both of them. The narrative expands as Haroun learns from directors in neighboring countries about the broader destruction and fragility of African cinema, painting a regional portrait of a declining industry. In the midst of this, he encounters Serge, Issa Serge Coelo Serge, who is shooting his own first film, Daresalam, a sign that film culture persists even as the local infrastructure wanes.

As disappointment deepens and the viability of producing a film in Africa seems ever more remote, Haroun decides to leave Chad, convinced that making movies there is nearly impossible at the moment. In a final, quiet gesture of transfer and hope, he leaves behind his film camera for a young boy who had been following him around with a homemade toy camera, a small act that hints at future possibilities for storytelling beyond the present constraints.
