Brief Encounter In Shinjuku 1990

Leung Foon [Lawrence Cheng Tan-Shui], Q Tai-long [Manfred Wong Man-Chun], and Pierre [Peter Lai Bei-Dak] take their wives and female companions on a leisurely sailing trip, hoping to unwind with friends and enjoy some time away from work. The group’s carefree mood is soon tested when Ann [Carol Cheng] Hui runs into her ex, Alan [Allan Fung Yi-Ching], a Médecins Sans Frontières doctor who has spent substantial time in Africa. Alan’s visit rekindles old feelings, and he privately invites Ann to consider moving to Africa with him, a plan she ultimately rejects. At the same time, Ann also rejects her superior KK Yeung’s [Eric Yeung Jan-Yiu] offer to immigrate and work in Australia, choosing instead to try to repair things with Foon.

Back on dry land, Foon and Q Tai-long move to a new company and meet a capable new secretary, Wendy Wan [Rosamund Kwan Chi-Lam]. Foon’s boss, Mr Tsang [Kenneth Tsang], sends Foon and Wendy on a business trip to Shinjuku, Tokyo. In the bustling Japanese city, they realize they’ve forgotten their proposal and end up burning the midnight oil in their hotel room. The following day, Foon delivers an impressive presentation to the client, and Wendy is visibly impressed. The pair then explore the city and, during a shopping excursion, Wendy ends up on the wrong tram. Foon races to guide her back, nearly depleting his cash in taxi rides until they secure a final ride with a credit card to return to the hotel. Inside the hotel, their professional restraint fades, and they share a private moment, a moment that binds them more closely than either expected. The next morning, they call Hong Kong to explain that they will need one more day to complete their assignment, turning the extra time into a chance for a lingering, intimate escape in Tokyo.

Upon their return to Hong Kong, the affair between Foon and Wendy gradually becomes harder to hide and increasingly destabilizing. The situation comes to a sudden crescendo at Wendy’s wedding to John Li [Lee Chung-Ling], where Foon arrives late and unintentionally leaves fingerprints on the marriage certificate, marking his involvement in the affair. The confession to Ann follows, and she, feeling betrayed, sends him away. In a later confrontation outside the Legislative Council building, Wendy reveals that she told John about their relationship, and John cannot accept it, choosing to walk away. Wendy also reveals that she will keep the marriage certificate because it bears Foon’s fingerprints, a keepsake of the affair’s consequences.

Meanwhile, Q Tai-long’s own trouble stems from his entanglement with Pierre’s girlfriend, Fanny [Vindy Chan Wai-Yee], which drives Fung [Chow Mei-Fung], Q Tai-long’s wife, to leave him and their young son. In a memorable scene, Fung returns to the home of Q Tai-long, Pierre, and Foon to cook dinner for them, insisting she does it for her son, and her presence brings a glimmer of happiness back into Q Tai-long’s life. This complex tangle of loyalties and desires presses Foon toward a final decision: he is determined to repair his marriage with Ann, hoping to restore some sense of stability amid the upheaval of love, fidelity, and friendship. Through these intertwined lives, the narrative explores the delicate balance between passion and responsibility, and how choices in matters of the heart ripple through friendships, marriages, and careers.
