In the quaint town of Jaipur, Abhay Gulati (Imran Khan) and Aaliya Khan (Deepika Padukone) have nurtured a lifelong friendship, their bond forged amidst laughter and playfulness. Aaliya’s passion for acting and cinema was ignited by her mother’s illustrious career as an actress, while Abhay’s creative side lay hidden beneath his mundane life as the son of Jeet (Navin Nischol), a movie theater owner. Pammi (Lillete Dubey), Abhay’s aunt, seemed to be the only one privy to the inner workings of his artistic inclinations.

As their friendship blossomed into romance, Abhay began to envision a future with Aaliya, planning to propose to her at some point. However, Aaliya viewed marriage as an antiquated institution, and her mother, Ayesha (Sharmila Tagore), was equally opposed to the idea. Abhay’s family-oriented nature contrasted sharply with Aaliya’s rebellious streak, which she cultivated through her love of smoking and flaunting her nonconformity.

Aaliya’s desire for independence led her to seize an opportunity to pursue acting school in Australia, despite her mother’s disapproval and Abhay’s heartfelt objections. The couple’s differing opinions on life, love, and ambition created tension between them, with Aaliya accusing Abhay of being judgmental and unambitious.

Abhay eventually convinced Ayesha to allow Aaliya to follow her dreams, but only if she agreed not to pursue an acting career. Aaliya reluctantly accepted the condition, and her journey to Australia took her from living with her strict aunt Khaala (Suparna Marwah) to a bohemian bungalow on Gold Coast, where she befriended Cyrus (Yudhishtir Urs) and Nadia/Nats (Shahana Goswami).

As Aaliya navigated her new life abroad, the distance between Abhay and her grew, leading to an estrangement that was eventually broken by a phone call. However, their subsequent conversations were tainted by misunderstandings, with Abhay conjuring up vivid images of Aaliya’s late-night escapades, while she was actually enjoying carefree times with new friends, including Rishabh (Kamlesh Ojha).

As Abhay’s insecurities intensify, he makes the impulsive decision to flee to Australia, much to the frustration of Aaliya, who perceives his actions as a lack of trust in their relationship. The couple’s bond begins to fray, and they ultimately part ways. In this foreign land, Cyrus and Nadia take Abhay under their wing, offering him refuge in their bungalow, where he struggles to find purpose. Initially, he takes on various odd jobs to make ends meet, but it’s his culinary skills that eventually gain recognition, with people willing to pay for his delectable dishes. As his confidence grows, Nadia notices Abhay’s natural talent and proposes a partnership, allowing him to open a small eatery.

Abhay’s restaurant quickly becomes a sensation, and as his entrepreneurial spirit flourishes, he starts to rebuild his life. Meanwhile, Aaliya is busy completing her acting course, while Abhay’s father discovers the success of his son’s venture. The stage is set for a family reunion when Aaliya’s mother, Ayesha (Sharmila Tagore), arrives in Australia for her daughter’s graduation. However, Aaliya’s impulsive decision to sign a movie contract without consulting her mother leads to a rift between them. Abhay, too, becomes disillusioned with Aaliya’s selfishness and ultimately departs.

As the months pass, Aaliya realizes the error of her ways and seeks to mend fences with her mother. She quits the movie and returns to India, where she must confront her mistakes and work towards reconciliation. Her mother eventually comes around, recognizing that Aaliya has grown stronger and more capable of facing reality. With her mother’s support, Aaliya secures permission to resume her acting career.

However, fate brings Aaliya back to Australia for the film’s shoot. One year later, she encounters Abhay once again, who reveals that he remains stuck in their past. She tries to convince him to move forward and consider marriage, but unbeknownst to her, Abhay has already made plans to tie the knot. The shock of this revelation sends Aaliya reeling as she rushes to Abhay’s doorstep, only to find him preparing for his wedding. In a desperate attempt to change his mind, Aaliya proposes to him with the very ring he once considered giving her, bringing their complicated history full circle.

As Aaliya pours out her heart to Abhay, confessing her deep-seated affection for him, she reveals the depth of her emotions.
