Set in the postwar era, Petr Sereda, a demobilized soldier, returns to his home village and to a life on the collective farm. He is warmly welcomed and soon takes on the role of chief accountant, a responsibility that anchors the farm’s day-to-day operations. The festive mood grows as the community also welcomes Oksana Podpruzhenko, a renowned labor heroine and Hero of Socialist Labor, whose achievements mirror the collective’s own aspirations.

The farm is steered by Nazar Protsenko, Petr’s old friend and wartime comrade, who serves as the kolkhoz chairman. Under his leadership, the community pursues high yields and steady progress, creating a dynamic partnership between Petr’s practical accounting mind and Nazar’s organizational drive.
