Stephanie Dale, Constance Bennett grows up in poverty under the care of a never-married mother, Dorothy Peterson, whose ongoing effort to keep up appearances leaves her daughter resenting the world she sees as petty and class-bound. Stephanie dreams of a life of wealth and ease, imagining a horizon far beyond the small confines of her upbringing. Her break comes when she lands a job modeling at a modiste shop, where a wealthy patron, David Meyer Richard Bennett takes an immediate interest in her. On the very day that first spark ignites, tragedy arrives: Stephanie returns home to learn that her mother has died.
