Boomerang Family 2013

Ki-soo Park Young-seo is a 40-year-old film director who has spent the past decade without steady work after his debut flopped, leaving him mired in poverty and weighed down by the sting of his wife’s affair. He teeters on the edge of despair, even toying with the idea of ending his life, until a timely call from his mother Youn Yuh-jung invites him to dinner and stirs the idea that a different path might still be possible.

He moves into his mother’s home, where his older brother Han-mo Yoon Je-moon also lives. Han-mo is a 44-year-old unemployed ex-gangster with five criminal convictions, and his own stubborn streak makes him far from thrilled about this new development. The house becomes a stage for old habits and grievances to surface, even as the brothers share a faint sense of responsibility and the faintest hope for a steadier future.

Into this tense setup arrives Mi-yeon Gong Hyo-jin, the sisters’ sibling who carries her own battles, accompanied by her bratty, rebellious 15-year-old daughter Min-kyung Jin Ji-hee. Mi-yeon, now 35, announces that she is leaving her second husband and needs a temporary roof over her head, bringing another layer of dynamic friction and care into the household. The reassembled family, each member carrying private disappointments and unspoken loyalties, begins to navigate the delicate balance of shared space and obligation.

As the days unfold, old resentments flicker alongside moments of tenderness, revealing the imperfect but enduring bonds that hold them together. The film gently observes the tug-of-war between pride and affection, between pursuing independence and asking for help, and between past choices and the uncertain promise of middle age. In this intimate portrait, everyday quarrels—the petty disputes, the subtle rivalries, and the quiet acts of care—accumulate into a larger, more hopeful picture of family life.
