During World War II, a soldier played by Buster Keaton survives a plane crash over the Pacific and drifts at sea, his face growing scraggly with a beard. He washes ashore on a beach, convinced he has landed in Japan, but he is actually in Mexico. He wanders into a fishing village and is promptly arrested after being mistaken for a wanted serial killer who is infamous for marrying and murdering women, a figure known as the bluebeard.
Keaton and another prisoner, Angel Garasa, are taken into the custody of an aeronautics scientist who dreams of launching a crewed rocket into outer space.
