In May 2021, the Moon is in the process of being colonized, drawing a diverse mix of people to budding lunar settlements like Moon City and Farside 5. Among the residents are two very different figures who symbolize the frontier spirit and the rough edges of this new world: the notorious millionaire J.J. Hubbard Warren Mitchell and the former-astronaut-turned-satellite-salvager Capt. William H. Kemp James Olson, the first man to set foot on Mars. Kemp left Space Corporation because he craved true exploration, while his former employer focuses on commercial passenger flights to Mars and Venus, painting a clash of values that will set the tone for what follows.
A tense balance of power soon emerges when a young woman named Clementine Taplin Catherine Schell arrives on the Nearest Side of the Moon, seeking news about her brother, a miner and prospector working a remote patch of lunar farside terrain near Spectacle Crater. The journey from Moon City to this distant outpost would take six days by ground transport, a delay that prompts Clementine to seek out Kemp, whose Moon 02 space ferry can cover the distance far more quickly. Their alliance grows quickly as they push deeper into the cold, craggy expanse where craters glow under alien stars and the air is thin with the hum of distant machinery.
The campsite near Spectacle Crater reveals a grim truth: Clementine’s brother is dead, murdered after discovering a lucrative vein of nickel that could make him rich. This discovery has not only attracted the attention of Hubbard and his followers but also set in motion a deadly game of cat and mouse as Hubbard’s men close in. Kemp, who has every reason to resist the danger, finds himself drawn into protecting Clementine and uncovering the truth behind the crime, even as Hubbard’s operatives pursue them with ruthless efficiency. Kemp’s skills as a pilot and a practical problem-solver prove essential as they fend off attacks and try to understand the motive behind the killings.
The situation grows increasingly perilous as Hubbard realigns his priorities. Feeling his hold on the nickel claim slipping away, he tries to coerce Kemp into staying on the mission to recover the enormous sapphire asteroid, a 6000-tonne treasure made of pure ceramic sapphire that sits in a low lunar orbit. The plan is audacious: haul the asteroid down to the lunar surface, using it as a strategic asset for building more powerful rocket engines—an irresistible prospect for anyone aiming to dominate the race to Mercury and beyond. Yet this plan would break Space Corporation law, and Kemp is caught between loyalty, ambition, and survival. Hubbard’s manipulation edges closer to forcing Kemp into a deadly choice, a move that becomes personal as Clementine’s life also hangs in the balance.
Kemp resists the coercion with a quiet resolve, even as the conflict escalates into direct confrontation. In a tense shootout, Kemp is compelled to shoot one of Hubbard’s men, a reminder that the frontier’s allure can also demand brutal sacrifices. In a final act of audacity, Kemp turns the situation on Hubbard by stranding him and his remaining associate on the massive sapphire asteroid just as retro-rockets ignite. The vessel fires away from the Moon, hurtling toward the lunar surface, while Kemp and Clementine grapple with the consequences of their choices.
As the asteroid’s dramatic escape unfolds, Clementine—now recognized as the next of kin to her late brother—gains legal ownership of his nickel vein and the nearby “crashed” sapphire asteroid, sealing her transition from a worried sibling to a young entrepreneur poised to inherit a fortune. The twist of fate blesses her with wealth and legitimacy in a world where risk and resilience are the true currencies of progress, underscoring the harsh but hopeful reality of lunar colonization.
What begins as a perilous confrontation over a priceless resource evolves into a testament to resourcefulness, courage, and the unpredictable rewards of the new lunar frontier. The tale weaves together ambition, loyalty, and the price of discovery, leaving Clementine poised to capitalize on her brother’s legacy while the Moon continues to attract dreamers, schemers, and explorers in equal measure.
