Bodyguards and Assassins 2009
Set in 1905 Hong Kong, revolutionary Sun Yat‑sen arrives to meet Tongmenghui conspirators planning to topple the Qing dynasty. When word spreads that hired assassins intend to kill him, a disparate group of protectors is recruited to shield him at all costs, because the success of their mission could determine the nation’s future.

In 1905, Sun Wen(/actor/zhang-hanyu) plans a covert journey to British-ruled Hong Kong to coordinate with fellow revolutionaries in a bid to overthrow the Qing Empire and establish a republic in China. When the Qing government learns of the mission, they dispatch a cadre of assassins to infiltrate Hong Kong and strike as soon as he arrives.
Ahead of Sun’s arrival, newspaper editor Chen Shaobai meets Li Yutang(/actor/wang-xueqi), a businessman who has quietly funded the revolutionaries, to brief him on the upcoming meeting. Trouble brews in the city as the assassins murder some of Chen’s acquaintances and even kidnap Chen during their raid.
Li formally declares his support for the revolution after the newspaper agency is closed by the British authorities, who choose not to intervene in Chinese political affairs. To safeguard Sun and ensure that the meeting goes ahead, Li gathers a motley crew from across the city—rickshaw pullers, hawkers, and a beggar—pulling together people from all walks of life to protect the mission.
Li’s son, Chongguang(/actor/edison-wang), is selected to serve as Sun’s decoy, designed to distract the assassins while Sun attends the meeting and leaves Hong Kong safely. The tense sequence of events underscores the fragile political landscape of the era, where alliances are tested, loyalties are proven, and a possible future for China hangs in the balance.
