What's After the Movie

Michelle Reis

Michele Monique Reis, born on 20 June 1970 in Macau when it was still a Portuguese colony, rose from a modest, hardship‑filled childhood to become one of Asia’s most celebrated beauty queens and a cult‑film actress. The daughter of a mixed‑heritage family—her father Francis Reis was an ethnically Portuguese Macanese and her mother Wu Guofang a Shanghai‑born Chinese—she endured poverty, a tin‑roof house and the crowded Chungking Mansions before being discovered by a modelling scout at age three. By the time she entered the 1988 Miss Hong Kong Pageant she had already appeared in more than seventy advertisements, and after winning both Miss Hong Kong and the inaugural Miss Chinese International titles she was swiftly courted by TVB, launching a film career that would span over a decade. Reis’s early screen work consisted largely of light‑hearted comedies and glamorous roles that capitalised on her striking looks, but she quickly sought greater artistic depth, delivering memorable performances in The Wicked City (1992) and The Black Morning Glory (1993), where she portrayed complex, often dangerous women such as professional killers and femme fatales.

Her breakthrough arrived with Wong Kar‑wai’s neo‑noir Fallen Angels (1995), in which she played a chain‑smoking, obsessive hitman’s assistant—a role that earned her critical acclaim, a Golden Bauhinia nomination and a lasting reputation as a grunge‑icon in Hong Kong cinema. Following this high point, Reis selectively chose challenging projects like Flowers of Shanghai (1998) and the Japanese thriller The City of Lost Souls (2000), while also becoming a high‑profile model in Japan and the United States. After marrying businessman Julian Hui in 2008 and giving birth to their son Jayden Max in 2011, she largely withdrew from acting, making only occasional appearances such as the 2009 Bodyguards and Assassins and a 2021 judge role on HKTVE’s King Maker. Fluent in seven languages and a practicing Catholic, Reis remains a beloved cultural figure, celebrated both for her early beauty‑queen glamour and her bold, avant‑garde film legacy.
