A bus flips over on the outskirts of the Gobi Desert along a road crowded with stray dogs, setting off a quiet, uneasy reckoning for the people who live there. Among the survivors is Lang, a former stunt motorcyclist and musician who returns home on parole after a decade behind bars for manslaughter. The town has changed in his absence: many have left, leaving a large population of stray dogs; his once-active band has fallen apart; his father runs a zoo that has fallen on hard times and is battling illness, and Lang’s sister is too far away, financially strained and unable to visit. The atmosphere is weary, and Lang must find a way to belong again in a place that looks a lot less familiar than it did before.

A government bounty targets a black dog believed to be biting people, part of a wider plan to remove unregistered animals in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and to ready the town for new business prospects. One night, after sharing a drink with Grape, Lang returns home in a fog of alcohol and finds himself captured by Butcher Hu’s gang. An earthquake provides a dramatic escape, but Lang still cannot locate the black dog. A visit to Butcher Hu’s snake farm reveals a surprising turn: Hu himself has been bitten by a venomous snake, and Lang’s decision to help him creates a fragile moment of mutual understanding. Hu explains that the dog has run away, and he signals a possible reconciliation, hinting at a future where past wounds might begin to heal.

The search culminates when Lang discovers the black dog in critical condition at a dog racing venue outside town. He brings the ailing animal home, but the reunion is short-lived: the dog dies, leaving behind a bittersweet legacy in the form of a puppy sired with another stray. In the town’s final ritual before its people again scatter, everyone gathers to watch the desert’s solar eclipse. The zoo animals roam freely, the town feels emptied of its former bustle, and Grape quietly departs on a long-distance bus, choosing her own path away from the circus. That night, Lang shares a last, quiet moment with his father in the hospital and makes the heartbreaking decision to pull the plug, a stark reminder of the fragility of family and memory.
