Bilby 2018

In the Australian Outback, a desert-dwelling Bilby forages for fruit while fleeing a goanna, but his path takes a dramatic turn when he discovers an abandoned Baby Albatross, a chick whose head is awkwardly turned. Moved by the chick’s vulnerability, he flips her over and surprises himself by feeling a protective pull toward her. Although he wants nothing to do with this interruption to his search for food, the bond between them grows stronger than his initial resolve.

The bilby’s reluctance isn’t enough to silence his sense of responsibility. Time and again, he tries to resume his hunt, yet every attempt to leave the chick in a new environment is interrupted by the need to keep the vulnerable bird safe. What starts as a mission to survive quickly becomes a test of patience, courage, and compassion, as the pair continually finds themselves pulled into danger rather than letting the other go.

Their journey unfolds as a string of perilous trials, each one testing their wits and endurance. They face a pack of dingoes, swim through a lake of piranhas, brave a field of spiky echidnas, slip past a lake full of crocodiles, dodge the breathing room of running emus, narrowly avoid being swallowed by a great white shark, and escape a spreading bushfire. Through it all, the unlikely duo sticks together, learning to trust one another and to rely on each other’s strengths.

At a last stop, they come to an extremely high and windy cliffside. Exhausted and uncertain, the bilby contemplates leaving the chick there, believing she’s ready to fly on her own. But just then, a white-bellied sea eagle swoops in and snatches the [Baby Albatross]. Fearful for his newfound friend, the bilby finds the courage to leap from the cliff and strike back.

In the ensuing chaos, the chick slips from the eagle’s talons, and the bilby and chick tumble into the air. The bilby twists his body to shield the chick and pockets her safely onto the cliff’s edge, while he himself is blown downward by an updraft. The moment is tense, but the two of them manage a hard-won reunion on the cliff as the winds lift them again, and their bond is reaffirmed.

The albatross finally finds her own wings, and the film closes on a hopeful note: the chick, now grown, lands back on the same cliff and, alongside her steadfast friend, thrives with an ample supply of food. A quiet optimism settles in as the two look out over the landscape they’ve navigated together, a reminder that unlikely friendships can redefine the meaning of home and safety.
