Two estranged brothers, Gordon Hardesty and John Hardesty, reunite at their missing father’s video store to clear out the property and sell his belongings after he has been missing for seven months. Gordon is reserved and has stayed away from their hometown, while John is a relaxed drifter who spends time with Hank. At the end of the day, Gordon goes to their father’s house where he is joined by his girlfriend, Margot. They all head to a local dinner, where John and Hank’s crude comments to Margot ignite Gordon’s anger. Afterward, Gordon and Margot return to the father’s house to spend the night. In a tense moment around 3:13, Gordon wakes to a noise and a shadow on the street below, noticing a key labeled “Office” on a shelf.

The next morning, the brothers rummage through their father’s office and uncover a VCR board game called “Beyond the Gates.” The game tape is in the VCR—the last thing their father watched before he disappeared. A mysterious woman named Evelyn asks if they’re willing to risk their souls to play the game. A bright flash and a strange sound occur, and when they switch the tape off, several hours have vanished from their day, leaving them unsettled and curious.

That night, John joins Gordon and Margot for dinner again. Margot suggests trying the game for fun. When they insert the tape, Evelyn instructs Gordon (the blue player) to stand in front of the TV and asks whether they have the courage to do what is necessary to save their father—namely, to locate the “four keys.” The gameboard displays four key images at its corners, and Evelyn’s eerie knowledge of their lives unsettles them enough to shut the game down once more. Later, Gordon wakes at 3:13 again and wanders downstairs to find the TV on with a static screen, joined by John and Margot. They contact their friend Derek, a police officer, to inspect the tape, but this time he sees only static and leaves frustrated. A receipt tucked inside the game box leads them to the shop where the game was bought the next morning.

That occult shop is run by a peculiar man named Elric. He explains that once the game starts, it must be completed, and warns them of the dangers of stopping prematurely. Before leaving, John pockets a dagger that resembles one of the game’s images. The trio continues to play, and the first card they flip is “The Drifter.” They dig up “The Drifter” in the garden and extract a key from a ragdoll hidden in a small tin. Hank, meanwhile, harasses his ex-girlfriend in a bar and is mysteriously disemboweled by an unseen force as John cuts open the ragdoll to retrieve the key, which is stained with blood. Realizing the stakes are higher than they imagined, Gordon panics and flips over the remaining cards to reveal Derek (“The Noble”), Margot (“The Maiden”), and their father (“The Father”). When they place the newly found key on the board, a gate manifests in the basement. Later that night, as they rewatch the tape, Evelyn instructs them to take the next key from the head of the lawman. Gordon realizes that Margot is indeed The Maiden, and in a moment of fear he attempts to abandon the game, but the board mysteriously reappears in the living room the next morning.

Margot seeks guidance from Elric, who tells her that there are only two paths ahead—play the game or die. He warns that the game returns every few years and that players do not bring it back, but she remains determined to see it through. The danger escalates when Derek confronts them with a shotgun, seemingly dazed. In a tense moment, Gordon discovers a small grey plastic head with a key protruding from it; he is forced to pull the key when Derek aims the gun at him, and Derek’s explosive death reveals the second key.

Gordon seeks a quiet moment to process what’s happening as Margot and John discuss their childhood. Their mother died in a car accident, and their father’s drinking problem worsened afterward, driving a wedge between him and his sons. Margot reveals that Gordon once drank heavily when they first met, a habit he stopped after an incident in which he accidentally broke her wrist, vowing never to drink again.

With two keys in hand, the brothers return to the basement where Margot stands before the now-glowing gate, holding the third key. They bring the dagger from Elric’s shop and step into a parallel dimension—the house becomes a distorted, otherworldly version of itself. In this alternate basement, they are ambushed by ghouls— Hank and Derek—wounded and attacked as they navigate the nightmare. Gordon defeats the ghouls, and the father’s ghoul reappears. Following Evelyn’s instructions, Gordon retrieves the father’s heart, removing the key and saving his father’s soul. They race upstairs, place the fourth key on the board, and are restored to their own dimension. Evelyn’s final admonition echoes: stop thinking about the dead and start thinking about the living. The film ends with Margot and Gordon leaving together, Gordon and John reconciling, and John choosing to stay behind to settle the estate.

Two post-credits scenes offer a glimpse beyond the immediate peril: Elric selling the game to a new buyer, and Evelyn staring out at the audience.
