Belphegor, Phantom of the Louvre 2001

A rare collection of artifacts from an archeological dig in Egypt is brought to the world-famous Louvre in Paris. As experts use a laser scanning device to determine the age of a sarcophagus, a spirit escapes and makes its way into the museum’s electrical system. The museum’s curator Bertrand Faussier, Jean-François Balmer, brings in the renowned Egyptologist Glenda Spencer, Julie Christie, to examine the findings, and she announces that the mummy inside the coffin was actually the evil spirit Belphegor. The revelation sets a chilling tone for what follows, casting a shadow over the marble halls and the careful routines of the Louvre’s staff.

Meanwhile, Lisa, Sophie Marceau, a young woman who lives across the street from the museum, slips into the Louvre after hours chasing her runaway cat. A sudden electrical shock transfers the stray spirit into her body, and she begins to move with a new, unnatural confidence. Soon Lisa is disguising herself as Belphegor and slipping away with the collection’s rare Egyptian treasures, convinced that they are hers by rights. When Belphegor proves to be more than a match for the Louvre’s defenses, the case is handed to Verlac, Michel Serrault, a detective who has stepped out of retirement. His arrival signals a race against time as he probes the strange thefts and the inexplicable shrinkage of the Egyptian exhibits. With the help of lingering staff memories and a keen eye for patterns, Verlac begins to untangle a web of eerie phenomena—how a single electrifying accident could fuse a spirit with a living body and blur the line between myth and reality. The investigation moves through museum corridors, past the whispering echoes of the ancient stones, and into the tense dynamics between reverence for history and the dangerous hunger of a living vessel inhabited by Belphegor. As the story unfolds, the tension between the museum’s heritage and a force that refuses to respect its boundaries intensifies, keeping the audience on edge until the final, unsettling turn.
