Renaldo Rossano, a celebrated opera singer, is drafted into the U.S. Army. His charismatic sergeant, “Bat” Batterson, is an opera fan who admires Rossano and hopes the star will lend his ear to Batterson’s sister’s singing voice. The rest of the platoon, along with the company commander, quietly disapproves of Batterson’s favoritism, worried that it undermines military discipline and the fairness owed to everyone in the unit.

In a bid to grant himself a chance to hear his sister Brigit sing, Rossano concocts a plan. He pretends to travel to New York for his manager to appraise Brigit’s voice, but the real goal is to let him perform publicly. Once Batterson discovers he has been deceived, his affection for the singer hardens into a stubborn resolve to make Rossano’s military life more difficult. The tension within the base grows as the ruse unfurls, revealing how personal ambition can clash with duty and order.
