Badal, played by Bobby Deol, is a naive yet sharp young man who leaves his small village to study in the big city. He is introduced to urban life by Damru, who calls himself Danny, and is portrayed by Harish Patel. In college, Badal crosses paths with Tina Oberoi, a bright and headstrong student portrayed by Twinkle Khanna, and after a series of misunderstandings and misadventures, a tender love begins to blossom between them.
Their relationship is not approved of by Tina’s wealthy widower step-father, Dinesh Oberoi, who views Tina’s fortune as his own leverage. Dinesh, guided by a desire to keep control over the family wealth, awaits Tina’s eighteenth birthday with plans that center on her riches and a proposed marriage for his son to secure a share of that wealth. When Tina’s devotion to Badal becomes known, he goes to the college principal with accusations, prompting a charge that Badal harassed a girl one night, though Tina stands firm in Badal’s defense and insists on his innocence. In response, Dinesh reaches out to a corrupt cop, ACP Negi, to intervene in the matter.
Negi arrests Badal on trumped-up charges, and Bhairon, Badal’s widowed father, travels to the city to understand what is happening. Dinesh orders Negi to remove Badal from the situation, and Negi agrees to this scheme, hiring a ruthless gang to hunt Badal down. To shield the villagers, Badal and Tina flee back to Badal’s village; however, Negi follows and threatens the locals. To save them, Badal drugs Tina with sleeping pills, lying to her that they intend to commit suicide, and then he surrenders himself to Negi.
When Tina awakens, she finds herself in the clutches of her stepfather, who tries to poison her; a friend reveals the truth about Dinesh’s real motives—he never intended Tina to marry his son and only wanted to protect his wealth. Shocked, Tina escapes in a car. Meanwhile, Badal and Negi collide in a confrontation on a hill, where Tina pleads with Badal not to kill Dinesh, whom she still views as a father figure.
Negi, who is momentarily believed to be dead, resurfaces and again pursues Badal, but Dinesh intervenes to shield Badal this time. Bhairon and two others ultimately kill Negi, though Dinesh suffers fatal injuries while protecting Badal. In the end, Tina and Badal are allowed to unite as the dying Dinesh grants his blessing and apologizes for his deeds. The story rises from intimate college encounters to a tense showdown, blending romance with a critique of greed, loyalty, and the costs of power.
