What Is Barbara Rubin and the Exploding NY Underground About?
The premise of Barbara Rubin and the Exploding NY Underground without spoilers.
The experimental film Christmas on Earth caused a sensation in New York City in 1964, with its groundbreaking use of orgy scenes, double projections, and overlapping images. This bold vision came from the 18-year-old Barbara Rubin, a remarkable figure who connected Andy Warhol with the Velvet Underground, introduced Bob Dylan to Kabbalah, and captivated Allen Ginsberg. A true maverick, she challenged artistic conventions and male dominance, even exploring Orthodox Judaism. Preserved through the letters of lifelong friend Jonas Mekas, this portrait by filmmaker Chuck Smith explores the life and legacy of a nearly forgotten artist who died at 35, reclaiming her place in film history.
