Bay, a talented young rock drummer in 1970s Thailand, sinks into a trance while practicing in his apartment, only to snap back to a blood-stenched reality: his drumsticks have become knives and Mrs. Victoria, his landlady, lies dead. Terrified, he bolts into the maze of streets and alleys to seek help from his neighbor Ton, a fellow drummer who plays in a band called The PC with Meow and Ooh. The two share a deep, long history that traces back to their days as classmates at a Buddhist temple, where an old monk taught them the Drums of the Gods—a tradition that will prove pivotal as the story unfolds. Bay’s fear gnaws at him, but his raw talent and the mystic discipline he gained from the temple keep him clinging to the belief that he is not a killer, and that his drumming may actually prove his innocence.

Meanwhile, the police descend on Bay’s apartment, led by Inspector Mr. Black Ear. The inspector has a peculiar habit of trying to kick in doors that open to the outside, and whenever he yells “Damn!” (Batsop! in Thai), a man named Sombat appears and rests his head on the inspector’s shoulder. The inspector also keeps a smart dog named Dumbass to sniff out clues. As the net tightens, Bay’s drumming begins to speak for him, and he convinces [Meow] and Ooh that he is innocent. Admitting guilt would violate one of the Buddhist precepts and would blunt the power of the Drums of the Gods, so the trio elects to run and hide, keeping Bay’s secret alive as they move from place to place.

The fugitives eventually slip into a village fair where The PC has been booked to perform. Meow and Ooh linger on the sidelines, leaving Bay to do all the hard work of setting up the stage, while they quietly plan to call the cops on him again. A pulse-pounding chase erupts through the fairgrounds and around carnival rides as the inspector closes in. In a moment of improbable skill, the inspector is armed with a rifle and proves to be a formidable marksman; Bay manages to snatch one bullet with his drumsticks, but another shot hits his shoulder, forcing a desperate escape. Bay tumbles onto a dam that overlooks a reservoir, where he talks a man off a suicide, offering him a chance to choose life over despair. A passing film truck picks him up, and Bay winds up joining a traveling film crew as a dubber—the audience roars with laughter at his timing and delivery. His surprising ingenuity earns him a moment of political mischief when he suggests—a wink at the political climate—that a party called Thais Love Thais might be a fresh spark in the national scene.

Bay is eventually caught and jailed, but so are Ton and The PC. After Bay pours his heart into a sorrowful ballad that moves the jail’s walls, Meow and Ooh decide to help him escape. They rig an explosion and Bay flees with [Ton], who senses the strain of the looming drumming duel between the Drums of the Gods and the Devil’s Drums. Their former teacher, Professor Tuengpo, once faced the dark drummer Ringo Starr in a bitter duel a decade earlier; Tuengpo defeated the dark rival but died before he could reveal the crucial tenth level of the Drums of the Gods, a detail that now presses on Bay and Ton as they seek the final edge. To overcome the evil, Bay and Ton must push past self-doubt and seek the elusive tenth level, a quest that suddenly seems within reach as they retreat into a shabby guesthouse to regroup and study.

Inside that grimy room, Bay voices the desire for bathtubs—an odd but practical comfort that inspires the owner, Mr. Chuwit, to reimagine his business and spark a chain of massage parlors—each one advancing with a bath in the room. The police close in again, and Bay is knocked unconscious. When he awakens, a medical examiner reveals that the body Bay is accused of killing may not be Mrs. Victoria after all, though the ME lets Bay go free. The drum-bound path to truth resumes, and Bay discovers that the village fair’s drum duel will soon pit Ton against a new Devil’s Drums master, Mr. Davis. As the duel unfolds in a boxing-ring setting, all styles of drumming come into play, their rhythms weaving a narrative of fate, courage, and art.

The revelation of the tenth level—centered on a shocking double-sexed technique—begins to crystallize: the power in this duel hinges on a transformation in which Bay’s body becomes the conduit for Ton’s strength, a shocking twist that binds their fates even more tightly. In the climactic clash, the Drums of the Gods emerge triumphant, their blend of rhythm, discipline, and daring sealing the outcome of the battle and underscoring the film’s message: mastery, memory, and music can prevail over fear, danger, and the darkest forces.
