Trevor Adams, Ben Foster, is a 16-year-old misfit at an American high school where he endures daily harassment from the jocks. Months earlier he had made a false bomb threat to the school, narrowly escaping expulsion, and since then he has been trying to rebuild his life. To regain his place among peers, he joins a theater group and is cast as the lead in a school play about school shootings, Bang Bang You’re Dead, portraying the character Josh. As word of the play spreads, parents and the community call for its cancellation. Yet Trevor’s stage work isn’t enough to vent his simmering resentment. Using a video camera, he compiles a ‘diary of violence’ that documents the bullying he witnesses and experiences. Trevor and his friends Sean (played by Randy Harrison), Mark Kenworth (played by Eric Johnson), and Kurt plan to storm the school and kill as many of the athletes as possible. Trevor meets Jenny Dahlquist, Jane McGregor, a fellow student who stays by him and begins to erode his resolve. Through her, Trevor starts to doubt whether the act is right. In the end, he is the only one who realizes that bloodshed only fuels more violence and hatred, and he evacuates the school with his art teacher, Mr. Duncan Tom Cavanagh. At the last moment, he restrains Kurt, Sean, and Mark, preventing the tragedy. The film closes with the play premiering successfully, despite the initial protests from parents and the community.
