Wealthy department-store heir Paul Saxon John Gavin appears to have it all, but his smile hides a fault line that cracks when he falls for Rae Smith Susan Hayward, a Nebraska dress-shop owner who ends their affair as soon as she learns he is married.

Rae moves to New York to chase her dream of becoming a fashion designer, then travels to Rome to link up with the famed Dalian Reginald Gardiner and his salon, hoping to build a name for herself. Meanwhile, Paul keeps wooing Rae, insisting that his alcoholic wife Liz Saxon Vera Miles won’t grant him a divorce and that Liz is unstable, having even attempted suicide in the past.

Despite these warnings, Rae’s resolve softens, and she becomes Paul’s lover, meeting him in secret at a house near Paris that he buys to house their affair. Paul’s Paul Saxon Jr. learns of the relationship and pushes Rae to end it, while Liz stages a dramatic public humiliation of Rae at a charity fashion show that features Rae’s own designs, purchasing the closing wedding gown for a staggering $10,000 to publicly seal Rae’s fate.

The tension erupts when, as a drunken Liz leaves for a party, Paul confronts her. In a heated argument over the ignition keys, the two collide in a car crash. Liz dies instantly, and Paul is left severely paralyzed in the hospital. He dies later from his injuries, but not before requesting that his son call Rae so he can tell her he loves her. Rae, Paul Jr., and his little sister Caroline are left to grapple with a heavy, shared grief.

The film closes with Rae alone beside a window in the home Paul bought for her, gazing at his picture. A knock echoes through the room, and Paul Saxon Jr. and his sister Caroline arrive at the door. Rae rises, steps into their embrace, and the three of them find a fragile, hopeful bond amid the memories that bind them to the man who started it all. Tammy Marihugh
