James is finally set free from prison after six years and returns to his hometown, where he quickly looks for steady footing. He lands a dishwasher job at a small local restaurant, and there he befriends the owner Carl, who has his own network and quietly helps James connect to a shelter. The shelter tip is hinted at, but James never mentions the name to the person there, and a sense of wary caution lingers as he settles into a routine. The rent for a room is about $100 a week, a price that seems steep in the moment but manageable as he tries to rebuild a life.
