Spoilers ahead
Eva, the wife of Viktor, the village pastor, invites her mother Charlotte for a visit to their rural home after seven years apart. Charlotte is a world-renowned pianist—aged, eccentric, and with a life that has swung between cosmopolitan circles and the demands of motherhood that she often set aside. Eva, while still musical and capable at the piano, frames her life around quieter roles: wife, mother, caretaker. She now tends to her disabled sister Helena, whom she brought home from the hospital. Helena is paralyzed and can only speak in fragments, a mode of communication that Eva alone seems to understand.
