Six introverted individuals, bored with their lives and desperate to escape their daily routine, hatch a radical plan to get themselves admitted into a psychiatric hospital. Among them is Maud, Pepper Binkley, a bored trophy wife trapped in a loveless marriage; Antoine, a sex-obsessed virgin; Alice, Stella Maeve, a woman whose only enjoyment comes from computers; Miranda, Camille O’Sullivan, a paranoid exhibitionist who dislikes being the center of attention; Paul, Lee Wilkof, a fanatical right-wing conspiracy theorist; and Alan, Bill Dawes, an androgynous rapper.

Upon arriving at the asylum, Nurse Milly, Judith Hawking, informs them that there is only room for one person. The six must face a sequence of tests and contests designed to separate the truly unstable from the rest, and the winner—the person deemed the craziest—will be declared the one to be committed to the institution. The whole competition, and every move inside the hospital, is overseen by an unseen figure known only as The Beard.

Into this tense setting steps a Dinner Host, Remy Auberjonois, whose presence adds a social layer to the proceedings and hints at the rituals surrounding confinement. The entire process unfolds under the gaze of The Beard, an enigmatic overseer whose presence looms over the hospital’s corridors even as he remains unseen.

The story unfolds with a measured, neutral tone that foregrounds character and situation over sensationalism. Each participant brings a starkly different hunger for escape, and their distinct personalities collide within the clinical walls, creating a fragile tension between sanity and performance. As the tests unfold and the dynamics between the six contestants, the nurse, the host, and the mysterious observer tighten, the narrative probes questions of control, perception, and the cost of choosing one’s fate. The film maintains a deliberate pace that invites viewers to weigh the uneasy balance between madness, choice, and the labyrinthine rules of a system designed to decide who belongs.
